Description:

TLX Silver is an insulation material comprising outer layers of coated metallised film, laminated to a non woven polypropylene fabric enclosing the core and welded along both long edges.

The core of the product consists of five layers of polyester fibre wadding separated by four metallised film layers.TLX Silver Warm Roof installation

R-values and TLX Silver

TLX Silver can be used to achieve the high thermal insulation requirements demanded by today's Building Regulations.

By combining TLX Silver with other traditional insulation materials, target U Values can be met in ways to match the circumstances.

For example, where rafters are only 100mm thick and 1F felt remains in place,

TLX Silver can reduce installation times of rigid polyurethane significantly by overcoming the need to cut and fix rigid polyurethane between rafters.

Alternatively, where rafters are 150mm thick TLX Silver can be used in combination with (cost-effective but difficult to install) glass or mineral wool to achieve U Values of 0.2.

U Values and TLX Silver

Using TLX Silver as a platform it is possible to build the required U Value using the BRE U Value calculator to maximise the thermal value and minimise the loss of internal space in new and re-furbished roofs, walls and dormers. LABC Technical Guidance Note

August 2006 Ref 06/001 Revision; b states ...

Paragraph 3.10.2 of BR 443 (2006 version) now clearly states that U Value calculations for multi-foil insulation products must be calculated using performance data measured by a Notified Body accredited for thermal testing by an EU national accreditation service and the tests themselves must be carried out to appropriate BS EN standards."

On the basis of the current information, TLX Silver is the only multi-foil product of which the technical group is aware that has been tested in accordance with the requirements of BR 443, and whose technical literature is based on the R value determined by the Hot Box test results.


TLX Silver - Product Installation

General installation guidelines for TLX Silver

Thinsulex can be attached to the rafters by using double sided tape, glue, staples or nails.
Thinsulex Silver should have a 50mm overlap and be taped along the entire length of the joint with a self-adhesive aluminium foil tape.

For under rafter applications

Starting at the ridge and working down, unroll Thinsulex Silver parallel to the eaves.
Cross batten Thinsulex Silver from the ridge downwards with the batten spacing no greater than 600mm. The cross battens should be a minimum of 38mm thick.
Finally fix the internal foil backed plasterboard to the cross battens.

For over rafter applicationsReplacement roof with TLX Silver Over Rafter

Starting at the eaves and working upwards, unroll Thinsulex Silver parallel to the eaves.

Fix battens on top and along the line of the rafters.

Install breather membrane over the battens.

Fix the membrane in place with the tile battens.

tiles/slates should be fitted as soon as possible.


When installing additional insulation.

PIR such as Celotex or Kingspan

Install the PIR (with a lambda value of 0.022W/mK) in accordance with manufacturer's instructions for an unventilated pitched roof, based on a between rafter application.
Refurbished roof requires 115mm PIR or New build roof requires 145mm PIR in addition to the TLX Silver, plus a 38mm air gap above and below the PIR must be maintained (as per BBA Certificate 06/4379)

Mineral wool

Place the mineral wool/fibre glass (with a lambda value of 0.044W/mK) in between the rafters and directly on top of the TLX Silver. The actual thickness/density requirement of the Mineral Wool is not specified on the BBA Certificate, therefore confirmation should be sought from the manufacturer.

Performance considerations:

As Thinsulex Silver performs as a vapour barrier, it is advisable to utilise a breather membrane, preferably reflective, in your roof system. This will eliminate the need for additional ventilation.
When installing PIR to attain the U Value of 0.16W/m2K a minimum rafter depth of 150mm is required.
When using insulated plasterboard, a vapour barrier must be installed.


TLX Silver Installation Options, including U Value examples

Complies with Part L by combining the benefits of thin foil insulation with other insulation materials. Using Thinsulex Silver as a platform it is possible to build the required U Value using the BRE U Value calculator. This provides a wide range of options which can be influenced by rafter thickness and width as well as whether rafters are partially or completely exposed.

TLX Silver Installation and fitting instructions

Installing TLX Silver below rafters
  • TLX Silver is unrolled across the underside of the rafters in horizontal layers, parallel to the eaves.

  • The product should be installed from ridge to eaves to ensure that any water inside the rafter space runs down and does not penetrate the insulation or the rafter space.

  • As the TLX Silver is unrolled across the rafters it is fixed in place using nails or staples of at least 14mm depth.

  • The next roll of TLX Silver must overlap the preceding layer by at least 50mm, and the overlap should be sealed along the entire length using a suitable adhesive tape silver Duck tape from Henkel is recommended.

  • TLX Silver should be permanently held in place using wooden battens fixed with nails.

  • Battens may run either parallel or perpendicular to the rafters.

  • When the bottom layer of TLX Silver has been battened, any excess material may be cut by running a sharp knife along the edge of the batten.

  • A foil-backed plasterboard is fixed to the battens. Batten thickness should be sufficient to ensure a 20mm air gap between the TLX Silver and the plasterboard.

  • Any exposed cut edges of TLX Silver should be sealed with a suitable adhesive tape. Any tears or holes in the outer layer should be repaired with heat-reflective tape.

  • A breathable roofing membrane is fitted above the rafters following the manufacturers instructions, then the Tiling battens and tiles are fitted.

  • TLX Silver can be cut with a sharp knife or scissors. Protective clothing is not required when handling TLX Silver.

  • TLX Silver may be installed either way up.

  • TLX Silver is unrolled across the top of the rafters in horizontal layers, parallel to the eaves.

  • The product should be installed from eaves to ridge to ensure that any water falling onto the TLX Silver runs down and does not penetrate the insulation or rafter space.

  • As the TLX Silver is unrolled across the rafters it is fixed using nails or staples of at least 14mm length.

  • The next roll of TLX Silver must overlap the preceding layer by at least 50mm, and the overlap should be sealed along the entire length using a suitable adhesive tape silver Duck tape from Henkel is recommended.

  • TLX Silver should be permanently fixed in place using wooden battens parallel to the rafters held in place with nails.

  • A breathable roofing membrane should be installed on the battens and tiling battens attached perpendicular to the rafters.

  • When the top layer of TLX Silver has been battened, any excess material may be cut by running a sharp knife along the edge of the batten.

  • Any exposed cut edges of TLX Silver should be sealed with a suitable adhesive tape.

  • Any tears or holes in the outer layer should be repaired with heat-reflective tape.

  • The start of the roll of TLX Silver should be stapled to the end rafter in the roof.

  • TLX Silver is then rolled along the inside of the rafter to a depth of 50mm and stapled in place.

  • TLX Silver is then taken across the rafter space to an equivalent point on the adjacent rafter, 50mm up from the bottom of the rafter, stapled and taken around the bottom of the rafter a distance of 50mm into the next rafter space.

  • The TLX Silver is effectively recessed 50mm into the rafter space.

  • Wooden battens or other secure means of attachment should be nailed to secure the TLX Silver effectively.

Eaves details

TLX Silver below rafter at junction of roof and wall.

  • At the bottom of the roof, TLX Silver should be cut to fit between the rafters, and taken down between the joists to either the wall plate or the cavity insulation.

  • The TLX Silver should be stapled to the joists, and all cut or open edges sealed with a suitable tape.

  • All junctions of TLX Silver with rafters, joists or wall plate should also be sealed with tape to create an airtight seal.

  • It is important that TLX Silver extends to either the wall plate or the cavity insulation to ensure continuity of insulation material. If TLX Silver extends to the wall cavity, then a barrier to resist fire for at least 30 minutes should be fixed at the top of the cavity to prevent spread of fire from the wall cavity into the roof.

  • Insulation material such as PIR or mineral wool inside the rafters should be fitted according to manufacturers guidelines. Additional insulation must extend at least as far as the cavity insulation to maintain continuity of insulation.

TLX Silver above rafter at junction of roof and wall.

  • At the bottom of the roof, TLX Silver should be cut to fit between the rafters, and taken down between the rafters to either the wall plate or the cavity insulation.

  • The TLX Silver should be stapled to the rafters, and all open or cut edges sealed with a suitable tape.

  • All junctions of TLX Silver with rafters, joists or wall plate should also be sealed with tape to create an airtight seal. It is important that TLX Silver extends to either the wall plate or the cavity insulation to ensure continuity of insulation material.

  • If TLX Silver extends to the wall cavity, then a barrier to resist fire for at least 30 minutes should be fixed at the top of the cavity.

  • Insulation material such as PIR or mineral wool should be fitted inside the rafters according to manufacturers guidelines. Additional insulation must extend at least as far as the wall to maintain continuity of insulation.

Ridge details

TLX Silver below rafter at ridge.

  • When installing TLX Silver on the first side of the roof, the top layer of TLX Silver should be fitted tightly into the ridge.

  • When installing on the other side, the top layer of TLX Silver should overlap the opposing side by 50mm.

  • The overlap should be taped along its entire length with a suitable adhesive tape.

  • Insulation material such as PIR or mineral wool inside the rafters should be installed such that the insulation on both sides of the roof meets up at the ridge with no gap.

TLX Silver above rafter at ridge.

  • When installing TLX Silver on the first side of the roof, the top layer of TLX Silver should be taken to the top of the ridge.

  • When installing on the other side, the top layer should overlap the opposing side by 50mm.

  • The overlap should be taped along its entire length with a suitable adhesive tape.

  • Insulation material such as PIR or mineral wool inside the rafters should be installed such that the insulation on both sides of the roof meets up at the ridge with no gap.

TLX Silver below rafters & between purlins
  • TLX Silver is installed horizontally across the underside of the rafters and stapled in place.

  • At the purlin, the TLX Silver is turned into the purlin a length of 25mm and battened in place with a 25mm batten.

  • The edge of the TLX Silver is trimmed by running a sharp knife along the edge of the batten.

  • Plasterboard may be fitted over the battens.
    Additional insulation material installed between rafters should extend behind the purlins.

Downlighters
  • TX Silver should not be placed in direct contact with a downlighter.

  • TLX Silver should be installed and the position of the centre of the downlighter marked.

  • A circular hole of radius 25mm greater than the radius of the downlighter should be cut in the TLX Silver .

  • The cut edge should be sealed with tape. Plasterboard should be installed and the light fitted.

Roof window
  • The window frame should be level or lower than the top of the rafter. TLX Silver can be installed above or below rafters.

  • In both cases, TLX Silver should continue up to the window frame, then cut to fit between the rafters, taken between the rafters to the window frame and securely taped in place.

  • Insulation material such as PIR or mineral wool should be installed between the rafters and should pack the space around the window frame.

Junction with dormer wall
  • The dormer wall should be insulated with a layer of TLX Silver inside the wall studs and additional insulation material such as PIR or rigid mineral or glass wool between the studs to give a U value of 0.30 W/m2K for the wall construction.

  • Continuity of both TLX Silver and the additional insulation should be maintained at all junctions.

Flashings
  • TLX Silver may be fitted either above or below rafter. TLX Silver is taken to the wall and a length of 25mm turned up against the wall.

  • A batten is fixed to the rafter to hold the TLX Silver tight against the wall.

  • A breathable roofing membrane is fitted above the rafters and also turned up at the wall.

  • Tile battens are fitted.

  • Flashing is fitted above the tile battens and over the breathable membrane.

  • Tiles are installed above the flashing.

Vents
  • TLX Silver can be fitted either above or below rafter.

  • TLX Silver should be turned up at the vent and sealed around the vent using a suitable adhesive tape.

  • The breathable roofing membrane should also be turned up and sealed to the vent.

  • The flashing for the vent is fitted above the tile battens and tiles.

Installing additional installation
  • Install additional insulation according to the manufacturers instructions.

  • Provide for air gaps between additional installation and TLX Silver as instructed.

  • TLX Silver must always be taped together when the surfaces are clean and dry.

Storage
  • TLX Silver rolls must be stored on a flat dry surface, protected from the weather and direct sunlight.

  • Make sure when installing TLX Silver that it does not come into contact with heat sources greater than 80C or electric wiring

  • To ensure compliance with Building Regulations always install TLX Silver in line with the information incorporated its BBA Certificate
