PIR insulation boards are the most commonly used rigid insulation boardsRigid PIR Insulation Boards

PIR boards are the most popular type of rigid insulation boards currently available.

They are closed-cell, rigid foam board insulation, that are primarily used on the roofs, walls and floors of domestic housing, offices, retail and industrial warehousing facilities and educational premisses to name but a few.

Most commonly, PIR foam boards are laminated with pure aluminium foil facings. However, PIR boards with glass tissue facings are also available.

These boards are designed to suppress the potential for condensation, and to allow effective bonding of adhesion. PIR Boards are also laminated to other elements such as plasterboard and plywood, as described below.

PIR Boards with Aluminium Foil Facings both sides

Celotex TB4000 - Thermal Bridging and General Application Boards

Celotex GA4000 - General Application Boards

Celotex XR4400 - Extra R-Value General Application Boards

Celotex CG5000 - Fire Resistant Partial Fill Cavity Wall Applications

Celotex FF4000 - Fast-R is purpose designed for Under-floor Heating Applications

Celotex FR5000 - Fire Resistant Class 'O' Rated Board for Pitched Roof and Wall Applications

Celotex TA4000 - Flat Roof for Single-ply Flat Roofing Applications

Kingspan TF70 - Under Ground-floor / Under-floor Heating Insulation Boards

Kingspan TP10 -Pitched Roof Application Boards

Kingspan TR26 - Flat Roof Boards for waterproofed with mechanically fixed single-ply waterproofing

Kingspan TW55 - Cavity Wall Partial Fill Boards

PIR Boards with Aluminium Facing + Plasterboard

Celotex PL4000 - Plasterboard high performance thermal insulation board bonded to 12.5mm tapered edged wallboard

PIR Boards with Aluminium Facing + 5.5mm WBP Plywood

Celotex TD4000 - Tempchek Deck is PIR insulation bonded to plywood for use in smaller flat roof applications.

PIR Boards with Glass Tissue Facings both sides

Celotex EL3000 - Energy-Lok is glass tissue faced on both sides - for use in flat roof structures

Kingspan TR27 - Flat Roof Boards for partially bonded built-up felt, mastic asphalt and cold liquid applied waterproofing

Kingspan TW53 - External Wall Board Insulation used behind traditional and lightweight polymer modified renders

PIR Boards with Bitumen polypropylene fleece

Celotex TC3000 - built-up flat roofing applications, suitable for hot applied bituminous and mastic asphalt waterproofing systems

PIR Boards from other Manufacturers

There are a number of manufacturers of PIR Insulation Boards.

The majority, Ballytherm, Ecotherm, Quintherm and Xtratherm for example, endeavour to compete against Celotex and Kingspan ... while others, such as Recticel, choose to manufacture boards of a higher quality.

Due to the economies of scale and the facility to quickly calculate product prices and delivery costs, we actively promote Kingspan and Celotex products, whose products are generally the most readily available.

While other manufacturers may not be in a position to compete directly with Celotex and Kingspan, their products are out there. Unfortunately, due to product availability and delivery logistics of such products, they have to be 'Priced on Application.

Cost / Benefit Analysis

PIR boards are the most popular type of rigid insulation boards currently available.

Compared to the poorer performing Expanded Polystyrene boards (such as EPS70) -
PIR Boards at a thickness of 100mm would require an equivalent of 170mm of EPS70 to achieve the same R-Value
An approximate price comparison of 50m² of 100mm PIR = £603.50, while 175mm EPS = £478.50

Meanwhile, compared to the higher performing Phenolic boards (such as Kingspan K7) -
PIR Boards at a thickness of 100mm would require an equivalent of 90mm of Phenolic Board to achieve the same R-Value
An approximate price comparison of 50m² of 100mm PIR = £603.50, while 90mm Phenolic = £859.00
