Knauf Plasterboards - General Information
Limitations
Plasterboards are not suitable for areas which are subjected to extremes of temperature and humidity.
Temperatures over 50°C can induce a change of state in the plasterboard which would reduce its physical performance and serviceability.
Humidity over 90% (95% If using Knauf moisture resistant boards) or subjection to excessive moisture will also reduce the serviceability of the plasterboard.
Storage on Site
Plasterboards are supplied on timber bearers. Packs should be lifted with a fork-lift truck and stacked not more than one-high on a flat surface to preserve stability.
They should be stored in a clean dry environment.
Health & Safety
Knauf plasterboards must be handled with care; boards must be carried on their edges. When cutting, ensure adequate ventilation.
Knauf Plasterboards are not classified as hazardous under CHIP2 Regulations 1994 and the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health (COSHH) Regulations 1994.

Performance
Fire performance
Gypsum is non-combustible. So, by definition, any of the Knauf plasterboard range is acknowledged to contribute to the fire resistance of the structure in which it is used.
Knauf plasterboards are designated as Class O materials under the Building Regulations 1991, Approved document B. They also meet BS476: Part 6: 1989, with fire propagation index I=12 and under BS476: Part 7: 1987, surface spread of flame, are designated Class 1. Specific Knauf Drywall Systems are fire tested in accordance with BS476: Part 20: 1987.
Acoustic Performance
All Knauf plasterboards offer excellent sound reduction qualities, whether used in drywall systems for ceilings, wall linings, partitions or separating walls. Plasterboard, as a single element, is not normally given a sound reduction figure. Specific Knauf Drywall Systems are tested in full accordance with BS EN ISO 140-3:1995 and the values calculated in accordance with BS EN 717-1:1996
Vapour Performance
Vapour check plasterboards have been tested in accordance with BS3177: 1959 and exceed the minimum requirement of 15MN s/g to meet this standard. 12.5mm Knauf Vapourshield has a water vapour resistance of 78MN s/g.
Sitework
Knauf plasterboards must be installed in full accordance with Knauf’s recommendations and those of BS8212: 1995 and BS8000: Part 8: 1994.
Gyproc Plasterboards - General Information
Acoustic performance
Noise in buildings is not only a nuisance factor but can also
significantly reduce comfort and efficiency. Building Regulations
Approved Document Part E stipulates minimum levels of acoustic
performance for all residential buildings. Areas of other buildings are
often specified as having higher levels of acoustic privacy depending
on the type of building, location within the building and type of
occupancy. Gyproc plasterboards can contribute to providing this
superior acoustic performance.
Fire performance
Gypsum plasterboard with glass fibre and other additives in
the core. Used in British Gypsum
partition, wall lining and ceiling systems to give increased fire
protection. Pink coloured face
paper.
The importance of providing adequate and effective fire protection in
buildings cannot be over emphasised. It is crucial that the fire
protection requirements for a building are identified and incorporated
to ensure that occupants are able to escape the building safely in the
event of fire. Gyproc plasterboards can contribute to providing the
required fire performance.
Moisture performance
Certain buildings or areas of buildings require extra
moisture protection. Gyproc plasterboards can contribute to providing
extra moisture resistance.
Gyproc FireLine with water repellent additives in the core,
encased in a special pink paper liner. Used in British Gypsum wall and
partition systems where both fire protection and moisture resistance
are required.
Thermal performance
Heat loss from buildings can mean lower comfort conditions
and results in higher fuel bills. Building Regulations Approved
Document Part L stipulates minimum levels of thermal performance for
external walls, roofs and floors in almost all types of new and
some existing buildings. Gyproc thermal laminates are available in a
wide choice of product options meaning that specified U-values can be
met.

Note: Definitions
The thermal properties of building materials and building elements are defined most commonly by terms and symbols as described below:
Thermal conductivity (λ - Lambda value)
(l) This is a measure of a material’s ability to transmit heat, and is expressed as heat flow in watts per m2 of surface area for temperature gradient of one Kelvin (K) per metre thickness.
It is expressed as W/mK.
Generally, dense materials have high thermal conductivity and are inefficient thermal insulants, whereas lightweight materials have low conductivity and can be efficient thermal insulants.
The lower the (λ - thermal conductivity) value of a material, the better is its insulating efficiency.
Thermal resistance (R)
This is the measure of the resistance to the passage of heat offered by the thickness of a material and is expressed as m2K/W.
The thermal resistance of a material is obtained by the following calculation
R = t (thickness in metres) divided by λ (thermal conductivity)
The higher the resistance of the element the better is its insulating efficiency.
Thermal transmittance (U-value)
The U-value of a building element is a property of its whole construction, including airspaces, and is the measure of its ability to transmit heat under steady state conditions. It is calculated by adding the reciprocal sum of all the individual thermal resistances and is expressed as W/m2K.
The lower the U-value of the element, the better its thermal insulation properties.
