The benefits of TLX Silver Reflective Multi Foil InsulationTLX Silver 12m2 Rolls

TLX Silver uses layers of infra-red reflecting film to reflect heat back into insulation containment cells. The system optimises fibre density, thickness and volume to reduce conduction and convection.

TLX Silver boosts the thermal value of glass wool and slashes the installation time for rigid polyurethane. It rolls out easily, and once taped, stops air leakage instantly, whilst maximising radiant heat gain in the surrounding air.

TLX Silver also stops moisture contaminating the insulation and saves on internal room space.

TLX Silver - BBA Certificate 06/4379

R-values and TLX SilverTLX Below breather membrane

TLX Silver can be used to achieve the high thermal insulation requirements demanded by today's Building Regulations. By combining TLX Silver with other traditional insulation materials, target U-values can be met in ways to match the circumstances. For example, where rafters are only 100mm thick and 1F felt remains in place,

TLX Silver can reduce installation times of rigid polyurethane significantly by overcoming the need to cut and fix rigid polyurethane between rafters. Alternatively, where rafters are 150mm thick TLX Silver can be used in combination with cost-effective glass or mineral wool to achieve U-values of 0.2.

U-values and TLX Silver

TLX Silver below glasswoolUsing TLX Silver as a platform it is possible to build the required U-value using the BRE U-value calculator to maximise the thermal value and minimise the loss of internal space in new and re-furbished roofs, walls and dormers. At www.just-insulation.com we believe this to be a breakthrough as TLX Silver provides a wide range of options that can be influenced by rafter thickness and width as well as whether rafters are partially or completely exposed.

LABC Technical Guidance Note, August 2006 Ref 06/001 Revision; b states ...

Paragraph 3.10.2 of BR 443 (2006 version) now clearly states that U-value calculations for multi-foil insulation products must be calculated using performance data measured by a Notified Body accredited for thermal testing by an EU national accreditation service and the tests themselves must be carried out to appropriate BS EN standards."
On the basis of the current information, TLX Silver is the only multi-foil product of which the technical group is aware that has been tested in accordance with the requirements of BR 443, and whose technical literature is based on the R value determined by the Hot Box test results.

What people are saying about TLX's BBA certificate ending the multi-foil debate

The benefits of TLX Silver Reflective Multi Foil Insulation

Contractors and distributors are welcoming the first certification award for multi-foil insulation from the British Board of Agrément (BBA) for bringing long overdue regulation to the multi-foil market. The first certificate - awarded to TLX Silver produced by Web Dynamics - comes hot on the heels of it becoming the first LABC multi-foil certified for Part L of Building Regulations and helps to bring clarity to a confused market.

Alan Thomas for the BBA said:

"This Certificate brings to an end the multi-foil debate and provides industry decision-makers with a definitive document setting out how the product sits in relation to building regulations throughout the UK. Other documents have been proffered by multi-foil suppliers - none of these go as far or as deeply as the BBA's assessment and do not follow the BR443 guidance called up in regulations and used by the BBA as the basis for the UKAS-accredited testing underpinning the award of Certificate 06/4379."

The BBA certificate is the result of a comprehensive approval process that takes into account many different performance criteria. Certificates provide authoritative and independent information on the performance of building products including details of durability, installation and compliance with all UK building regulations.

Assessments involve three distinct areas:

Laboratory testing - carried out to UKAS requirements
Site inspections - undertaken by BBA's own inspection services team
Factory production control

Paul Everall, chief executive of the LABC said:

"The BBA certification will give contractors and distributors clear guidance on the multi-foil market and supports our decision to endorse TLX Silver in the guidance note we issued earlier this year."

Since April, and the introduction of Part L of Building Regulations in England and Wales, the requirement has been to install better insulation in loft spaces. Multi-foil insulation products, despite being relatively new to the market, are proving popular. Unlike conventional monolithic insulation materials, their performance is achieved through reflectivity of the layers of foil that make up the system coupled with the insulation qualities of the material between the layers.

John Tebbit, industry affairs director at the Construction Products Association said:

"I am delighted to see a multi-foil product being independently tested using international and European standards and being certified by BBA. By doing this Web Dynamics have given confidence to consumers, designers and building control that TLX Silver really does what is claimed."

Web Dynamics believes that certification presents a recognised way forward for the market that has up to this point been confused by the requirements of the new regulations.

Nick Searle, managing director of Web Dynamics, said:

"A clear message is emerging that a single layer of multi-foils will no longer suffice. Only products tested to the relevant standards should be installed."

TLX Silver is quick to install, leaving no mess and results in low wastage. It works by boosting the thermal value of glass wool and is proven to cut the installation time for PUR rigid board.

TLX Silver is part of an insulation system. In most applications it should be used with a minimum of 120mm of glass wool (Lambda value 0.032) or 70mm of PUR rigid board (Lambda value 0.023). It is rolled out during installation to stop air leakage while maximising the gain of radiant heat in the surrounding air. At the same time it stops moisture contaminating the insulation and saves on internal room space.

TLX Silver applications designed to achieve various U-values levels Contractors and distributors are welcoming the first certification award for multi-foil insulation from the British Board of Agrément (BBA) for bringing long overdue regulation to the multi-foil market.
